Rescue dog portrait from photo - Pebbles
Pebbles' portrait was commissioned by Christine from Richmond to celebrate a much-loved rescue dog with a look that's entirely her own.
A DNA test revealed quite the mix - Pomeranian, Miniature Schnauzer and Parson Russell Terrier - which goes some way to explaining the scruffy coat, bright eyes and distinctive little face.
Working from one favourite photograph, I created an original hand-drawn portrait using coloured pencil and wax crayon.

One dog, quite the mix
Pebbles is a rescue dog with a look that's pretty difficult to put into one breed.
A DNA test eventually provided the answer: she's a mix of Pomeranian, Miniature Schnauzer and Parson Russell Terrier. Suddenly the scruffy coat, alert ears and distinctive little face made a bit more sense.
Christine wanted a portrait that looked unmistakably like Pebbles - whatever combination of breeds went into making her.
From favourite photo to portrait
Christine chose a simple photo of Pebbles looking straight at the camera - and it had everything I needed.
Her bright eyes, alert ears and slightly tilted head were all clear, while the natural light picked up the different colours and textures in her scruffy coat.
Nothing fancy. Just a good, clear photograph that looked unmistakably like Pebbles.

Creating the portrait
Pebbles has the kind of scruffy coat where drawing every single hair would probably be a mistake.
Instead, I used coloured pencil and wax crayon to build the larger shapes, colours and loose strands that give her coat its distinctive texture without making the portrait feel too busy.
Her bright eyes, muzzle and markings around the face did the rest - the little details that made the finished portrait unmistakably Pebbles.
The finished portrait
Once Pebbles was finished, Christine received a preview before the A5 portrait was carefully packaged and sent to her in Richmond.
Small in size, but with plenty of Pebbles packed into it.
