Hand-drawn dog portraits from photos
Turn a favourite photograph into an original portrait that's unmistakably your dog.
I draw every portrait by hand using coloured pencil and wax crayon, starting with a strong, recognisable likeness before bringing in my contemporary drawing style.
No professional photos needed. If you've got a photo where they just look like them, we're off to a good start.

Your dog, drawn by hand
No filters, digital shortcuts or printed outlines. Every portrait starts with a blank sheet of textured paper and is drawn entirely by hand.
I use coloured pencil and wax crayon to create a recognisable likeness, while keeping the visible marks and texture that make it feel like an original piece of artwork rather than a copy of a photograph.

Your photo doesn't need to be perfect
Most of my dog portraits start with ordinary photos already sitting on someone's phone.
Good light and clear features certainly help, but you don't need a professional photograph. I've worked from screenshots, combined details from several favourites and used additional photos when one small detail wasn't quite visible.
The important bit is finding a photo where your dog looks like your dog.
Not sure which one to choose? My photo guide will help, or send me your photos and I'll happily take a look.
Real dog portraits from photos
No two commissions start quite the same way.
Some begin with one favourite photo, others with several to choose from, and occasionally the best reference is simply an old screenshot that means something.
Here are a few real dogs and the photographs behind their finished portraits.

Looking for something specific?
Sometimes a dog portrait marks more than an everyday moment. It might be a way to remember a much-loved companion or a surprise for someone who wouldn't expect it.
Kind words from dog owners
The best test of a portrait is whether it looks right to the person who knows the dog best.

Frequently asked questions about dog portraits
A few of the things people usually want to know before commissioning a hand-drawn dog portrait.
-
Absolutely. Every portrait is created from your own photographs, whether you have a Cockapoo, Labrador, Border Collie, Working Cocker Spaniel, rescue dog or any other breed or cross-breed.
Every dog has its own unique features and personality, and my aim is always to create artwork that feels instantly recognisable, whatever the breed.
-
Yes. I regularly create portraits featuring two or more dogs together.
If your dogs appear in separate photographs, I can often combine reference images into a single composition where it works naturally.
If you're unsure what's possible, feel free to get in touch before ordering.
-
That's often perfectly fine.
Many portraits begin with ordinary phone photographs, and memorial commissions are sometimes created from older images that can't be replaced.
The most important thing isn't having a perfect photograph—it's having one that captures your dog's expression and personality.
If you're unsure which image to use, take a look at my photo guide, or send me a few options and I'll happily help you choose.
