The little details matter most - the eyes, markings or expression that made your pet immediately recognisable.
I use coloured pencil and wax crayon to keep those familiar features at the heart of the portrait, while developing the photograph into an original piece of artwork.

Older phone photos, favourite snapshots and even screenshots can sometimes give me everything I need. If you have several, they can also help with details that aren't quite clear in the main reference.
The important thing is finding the photograph that looks most like the pet you remember.
